First Post. Woot woot!

It's 12:30 in the morning where I am right now and so I have little energy left to going on a big introduction and explanation on why I made this blog. So, let's get to the point shall we. As per the title and description, this blog is supposed to help me keep myself in check while I'm attempting all the above. The past few weeks I've been arguing with myself on when exactly I should apply for my MBA; this year, or next year.....

Reporting for Duty!

Short post today. No, it doesn't mean I'm slacking off. On the contrary, today I made good progress with finding resources! Yeay! I got the OG (Official Guide) for GMAT review - which everyone seems to refer to as the holy grail of GMAT prep books. And also started reading a GMAT guide book to get me started. So it seems I'm somewhat  ready for week 1 of my GMAT prep.

Unfortunately, the Prof. has failed me again today. And we're rescheduling for tomorrow. I think he knows how disappointed I am - but what can you do :P Anyways, I used my time wisely aside from jump starting with the guide book, also started some flash cards! I found a post on beatthegmat.com (BTG), which seems to be a post from one of BTG's co-founders, regarding his strategy and how he scored a 720. He pointed out the importance of flash cards, so just like him, I'm writing these on my own too!

New Layout!

I know, this has nothing to do with GMAT or my application plan but look at it! Doesn't it look nicer? :D
No, not trying to hide the fact that I didn't get to do my AWA assessment today. It's not my fault, the professor was out. Plus, I don't think he even read the 2 essays I emailed him. So, rescheduling that for tomorrow.
Now, today was not completely wasted and I did not just spend 3 hours of my GMAT study time playing around with the blog's layout.

Instead, I used that time to go through beatthegmat and look for more study tips. I found a few very useful articles on the math topics that the Quant section covers, as well as strategies on how to answer certain types of questions and shortcuts for math problems. I probably won't focus on these too much until my 3rd week, but it's good to have them on hand now. I'm only gonna get busier from now on so while I have the time right?

PT1 Assessment: Verbal Section

As many of you know English is not my first language, though I do remember speaking it first as a child and having to actually take classes to relearn my mother tongue. That said I did pretty awesome on the Sentence Correction type questions on the verbal portion of the test which basically means I have a good grasp of the English grammar! Haha. I think all those years taking the TOEFL has finally paid off. Also, I don’t really suck at the Reading Comprehension questions either. Again, all thanks to TOEFL. I just need to spend an extra minute or two on actually reading the question because I seem to try to scheme through it too fast like what I do on the TOEFL. Now, the part that I’m actually disappointed in myself in is the Critical Reasoning questions. I mean, come on! Was I not taught how to think critically that I sucked so horribly on these questions? *palm to forehead - sigh*
Anyways, here’s the breakdown.

The breakdown
Total number of questions: 41

Allotted time: 75 minutes
Time used: 65 minutes (again with the rushing!)

Answer break down:
Sentence Correction
Reading Comprehension
Critical Reasoning
Total
Correct
11
6
4
21
Incorrect
4
6
10
20

Assessment of answers:
(Category 1) Mistakes made because of carelessness/rushing: 4 (all are RC type questions)
(Category 2) Mistakes made because of content/question type: 17
(Category 3) Fluke: 2

PT1 Assesment: Quant Section

Just completed the assessment for the math section (affectionately referred to as the Quantative section) of the practice test I took yesterday. I don't think it looks too bad. There might be hope after all!!

The breakdown
Total number of questions: 37

Allotted time: 75 minutes
Time used: 50 minutes

Correct answers: 19
Incorrect answers: 18

Of the incorrect answers, mistakes made because of:
Carelessness/rushing (let’s call this Category 1): 9
Content (Category 2): 9

So, in this first test, IF I wasn’t rushing and took the appropriate amount of time to answer each question, I would have only made 9 mistakes due to the unfamiliar (read: long forgotten) math problems or Category 2. I had 25 minutes left to spare after I answered the last question. That means I could’ve spent an extra 2 minutes on each of those 9 questions and still left with 7 minutes to spare!

First Practice Test

I just finished taking my first GMAT practice test and all I want to do is scream out loud right now, literally!! OMG was that exhausting! >__<”
Note to self: schedule my actual test in the morning, there’s no way I’ll be able to do it in the afternoon like I did today! Second note to self: please eat before you attempt to take a 4 hour test that only allows 5 minute breaks in between. Last note to self: don’t attempt any hard work or labor the day before the test, if possible just don’t do anything that day and sleep early!

I woofed down a whole plate for dinner right after finishing the test. The portion was probably triple my usual! Sorry for all the exclamation marks! :P Anyways, now that I’ve finally managed to calm down and take a quick look at my results I just had to write about it right away.

CAT Practice Test 1
Preparations:
My preparation for this test has pretty much only been reading about what the test format is like and doing a couple practice questions to be a bit familiar with each type of question. No studying or reviewing any of the topics.

GMAT Prep: First Steps...

Soooo......

Tomorrow I'm gonna be taking my first GMAT practice test, hopefully I'll do good. I tried out a few practice questions today and some of them are pretty tricky. One number was so easy that I literally LOL-ed because I got it wrong. I was thinking "Doh!". Then the image of Homer Simpson pop up in my head. Just have to do my best!

Once I've completed my initial test, the next things that I'll need to do are:

First Post! Woot woot!

It's 12:30 in the morning where I am right now and so I have little energy left to going on a big introduction and explanation on why I made this blog. So, let's get to the point shall we.
As per the title and description, this blog is supposed to help me keep myself in check while I'm attempting all the above. The past few weeks I've been arguing with myself on when exactly I should apply for my MBA; this year, or next year. The 3rd round of deadlines is just months away so really I shouldn't even think of applying now, it's just insane - what on earth was I thinking?! So, common sense and a certain person got into my head and made me realize that, it's okay to wait!

And so here I am, on my second week trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be doing and where on earth do I even start with all this. Enter www.beatthegmat.com – the best thing that could’ve ever happened to this damsel in distress. An invaluable resource that I think anyone who’s considering an MBA should utilize to its fullest. So, I stumbled across Stacey Koprince's articles on beatthegmat.com on just starting the GMAT prep and it pretty much saved me from crashing and burning before I even got started. I got all the questions in my mind sorted out. It's also per her advice that we keep a journal to write down our study plans and keep everything in check.
